To those who were curious, I have typed out the letter (I left out 3 sentences as they involved a different issue and had identifying information).
    @Awesome Queen of Amazingtown @Apple iPhart6 @FrothyFrog @HeavenBlue (I think that's everyone?)

    Dear Parent/Guardian,
It has been brought to my attention that Years 1, 2 and Kindergarten are having difficulties in English.
The teachers of these 3 year groups are concerned that the emphasis that needs to be placed on spelling is not being met.
I must remind you that as part of your child’s enrolment, you agreed to assist the school with your child’s learning, by doing some work at home.
These are crucial stages in a child’s learning, as this is when they form the basics of their knowledge. Without these basics, your child will not perform to the best of their ability.
If you have any concerns about your child’s abilities, or wish to discuss learning strategies, please contact your child’s class teacher.
I will be arranging a meeting with all class representatives next week, as this is an ongoing issue.
    Warmest regards,
    [Principal]

Check that you have your language set to English (UK) and not English (US).

I've changed my phones language to English (Australian). Hopefully that makes a difference. I can't believe I didn't even think about the phones language. Duh!

If my school sent that letter home... I can't even wrap my head around it. This is their job. Yes, parents have to be involved and to be accountable for some of it, but by crikey! When asked 'what is a school for' the answer should be something along the lines of 'it is an institution designed to educate students, and most importantly in the areas of reading, writing, spelling and mathematics"....
I'm sorry, but for them to throw that back at parents is a cop out. I'd be mighty peeved. I *am* mighty peeved and my children don't even go there!

Yes, it is causing a lot of ill feelings- even with upper grades, as they would have been through some of it.
I am not a class rep, but oh, to be a fly on that wall... that meeting will be interesting.

You can ask for a meeting for yourself.

I would at the very least write a formal letter back to the principal in response. Ask for a formal response from him/her.

We have met with them over and over. It has been an ongoing issue since DSD was in Kindy- so 5 years now.

Thank you for typing it out. That is really bad! Yes, parents can help out and enhance their learning by helping at home but you shouldn't have to do their job.. How confusing for the children too! I hope their meeting is productive.

That's just crazy!!! Have people mentioned the American spelling in the books they're learning from as being an issue?
