Default When did you see a heartbeat?

Hi all! I have a question that I'm sure has been asked a million times - if you had an early scan, how many weeks/days were you when you first saw (even if you didn't hear) the heartbeat? And was it normal or trans-vaginal ultrasound?

My doctor has referred me for a early scan due to my short cycles and thyroid condition. She told me to go after 6 weeks to see the heart beat. I'm booked for Xmas eve when I'll be 6 + 0 by LMP and 6 + 2 by ovulation dates (more accurate as confirmed by digital OPK and other signs) but am wondering if that might be a bit early and I'll get disappointed if I don't see the heartbeat.

Your experiences and thoughts would be appreciated!

My GP told me to book in after 6 weeks but the imaging centre I booked with strongly recommended I book for 7 weeks. So I went at 7 weeks and saw a heart beat. They did both external and trans-vaginal ultrasound for a better measurement, I can't remember which one showed the HB (or both?).

Dd1 had scan at what we thought was 12 weeks (dr going by lmp) but turned out i was just over 6 weeks. Normal scan, saw heartbeat but didnt hear it.

Dd2 had scan due to suspected ectopic. Was just over 5 weeks. Again normal scan and saw heartbeat straight away.

Dd3 i was about 8 weeks, normal scan, saw heartbeat straight away

Dd4 was 6 weeks, tried normal but couldn't see anything so had to do trans-vaginal.

My first 2 I didn't get a scan until 6/7 weeks both had a HB. This time I was 5+0 (positive of dates) and there was an obvious little HB flickering away, that was normal u/s not transvaginal.

At 5w5d, we saw a slow HB which my FS said had probably only just started. He warned us about three times before the scan that we probably wouldn't see one though! This was a transvaginal u/s.

With my son I saw a hb of 125 at about 5+4. I was told that was very unusual though.

My current pregnancy I saw only a fetal pole at 5+0, 109bpm at 6+2 (just under normal) and 138 at 7+1 (normal).

I reckon you have a good chance of seeing a hb at 6 exactly but if your dates are out slightly (this can happen even with OPKs), you may not. My experience has also been that the hb may not be very fast before 7 weeks but can catch up.

    Good luck!!

At 6 +0 saw the heart beat straight away with transvaginal US, 138bpm. It was IVF though so accurate with dates. They did warn us it might be a bit early.
