    Default Scared of possible Ectopic

Long post - sorry! I am freaking out a little (ok a lot) that I may have an ectopic pregnancy. I got an early BFP 4 weeks ago today.
My doc sent me for a dating scan 2 weeks later - they found nothing, suggesting too early to see, must be less than 5 weeks, come back in 2 weeks and get beta HCG done in meantime.
My hcg 2 days after scan was 1600.
A few days later I started spotting - brown, minimal, doc was not concerned. Last week I called doc for reassurance as I was still spotting (not getting worse, but still there), and he recommended getting my bloods and scan done asap.
When I showed up for scan, the women questioned why I was there a week earlier than planned and said straight out we probably wouldn't see anything today as we hadn't seen anything the week previous. She didn't say much during scan, did both abdominal and vaginal, saying prob still too early. I questioned her re shouldn't she be able to see something if my hcg was 1600 last week, she kind of evaded the question but essentially said no, each pregnancy is different. I asked if there was any sign of ectopic or MC and she said no, and that my lining was still thick indicating everything was fine.
Went to doc next day and he said my hcg had quadrupled in 6 days indicating a normally progressing pregnancy. He couldn't explain why they hadn't seen anything only suggested to scan again in 2 weeks (I insisted on hcg test in between). I am a bit perplexed as to why I have to wait another 2 weeks, surely they would want to see something before that given my hcg was in the vicinity of 6-7000 last week?
Does this sound right? I thought they should be able to see a sac at least by 1-2000 and they didn't see anything at 6000. Or am I reading into this too much as my doc seems to think things are fine just early?
I have had no pain. The spotting (however minor) and lack of sac on scan with high hcg has got me thinking ectopic. Why is my doc not more concerned about this possibility?

    Dates to summarise:
    BFP 10/11 - very feint
25/11 - dating scan showed nothing
    27/11 - hcg 1600
    3/12 - dating scan nothing, hcg 6-7000 (didn't get exact #)

Is there any chance this pregnancy is still viable? shoukd I demand an earlier scan or just trust the doc? Do I have to be in excruciating pain before they will consider an ectopic?

I had a kind of similar situation, hcg rising but nothing seen on ultrasound. My GP was very concerned so sent me to hospital and they admitted me as a pregnancy of unknown location. I was told the same thing, that by the time the hcg is 1000 something should be seen on ultrasound. If you got a bfp 3 weeks before your last dating scan then you should be roughly 6-7 weeks, so something probably should have been seen but I have read many stories of nothing being seen till later. Are you getting any pain? If you are unhappy with your doctors answers I would just go to hospital. My hospital took it very seriously (refused to let me go home!) and arranged an ultrasound with a very senior experienced doc, they might be able to do that and get you some answers. Fingers crossed xox

Has the dr referred you for another scan? Could be this bubba is a slow grower?
I had brown spotting with both my babies I was always under the impression brown spotting is generally ok as it is old blood.
With DS I had a scan at 8 weeks and DD due to a big bleed had a scan at 7 +5 weeks. I got an early bfp with and waited quite a while for a dating scan so I knew something would be seen.
You could still be a bit to early to see anything..
I've never had an ectopic pregnancy so im not sure although I do know people who have and they have said it is extremely painful.
Big hugs and good luck I really hope this is a sticky bub for you xo

No no pain. But I am living in fear of an ectopic pain attack! It's bizarre. With my first scan I told the technician I had a BFP 3 weeks earlier (it was only 2, I exaggerated) and I expressed my concern at being able to see something by then, he dismissed it totally and said the home tests these days were super sensitive and it was not only possible but probable that I was too early, and that he saw this type of thing all the time. My GP has been around a loooong time also and I do have a level of trust in him (have been seeing him since I was a kid), he has a good reputation.
So whilst I trust these people I still don't feel overly confident... Then I don't feel right rocking up to hospital just because of my anxiety over the issue, I don't have pain at all and the spotting is so minor (i can go 24hrs without anything, I'd probably miss it if I wasn't looking so hard). Perhaps I should wait until I have another hcg test this week, if it's still going up (would prob be 20000 or so if it's still going at same rate?), demand an earlier scan?

Yes I have another scan scheduled next week. I am getting hcg levels checked again this week for my own piece of mind (my suggestion). I feel like a hypochondriac calling my doc all the time, but it's either that or Google...
My mum apparently had something similar happen to her so I am holding out hope it's a similar situation and Bub is just hiding somewhere IN my uterus that's hard to see. I do have a tilted uterus which I know can make it harder, but we saw DS at 5+4wks heart beat & all...

Where did you go for your scan? Was it an internal scan?

I've found that the specialist women's ultrasound centres have better equipment and the staff are experts at looking at pregnancies, so tend to be better at tricky early scans than the "general" ultrasonography places that also do X-rays etc. In my experience, the staff specialist imaging centres were also very understanding when i explained I had been feeling anxious and talked me through everything they were doing and seeing. At the place I've been to, a sonographer does the scan and then the doctor comes in to have a look at the images and talks to you too if there are any questions or concerns. Not every area will have a specialist women's/pregnancy imaging centre though so you might not have much choice where to go for the scan.

Good luck - hopefully soon you get to see a little blob in the right place doing all the right things.

Don't google!! Google is your worst enemy
I have a retroverted uterus and had to have internal scans even at my 12 week scan because they couldn't see anything. See how you go this week... maybe go to a place that specialises in women... I know exact here in brisbane are more of a specialist scanning place.
    Fingers crossed xo

Thanks that is really good to know. There is a part of me that keeps thinking I am just being too impatient, and to trust the docs. I will seriously consider going to another scan place - I don't think my local one is incompetent, but if I need someone more specialised/more specialised equipment, perhaps a trip to the city is in order! I haven't even booked in with an OB yet was waiting to get a date/confirm its viable. Do you mind sending me the name of specialised scan place is Brisbane if poss? Priv msg?
