We lived in Kohimarama which is just next to Mission Bay. Stunning place.
Good local cafes, beach, playgrounds etc.
St Heliers has great local shops.
    Good bus route to city.
    Great schools too.

Also there's a great football (soccer) club at Madills farm in Kohi. They do classes from age 4 up. It's a really social club and could be a good way for you all to make friends.

New Zealand is a great place for kids in my mind.
    I am from Auckland.
Childcare is really quite cheap over there comparing to here.
My mum was paying like $20 a day or something like that for my sister that's not including any rebates.
The government does pay you childcare(similar to tax benefit), my sister was getting like $80 a week. But that also depends on how much you earn.
I am pretty sure as long as you are considered a permanent resident you can get all the benefits for your kids.
But it's probably best to have a look on the Work and Income support website (centrelink) and Inland Revenue website (ATO) to make sure.
