    Default Relocating to New Zealand

    Hi,
Sorry not sure whereabouts to put this so move if necessary.

We may be relocating to NZ next year for DH's work for probably 2 years. I am not sold on the idea, even though it is a no brainer for his career. Has anybody done this before? I know the AUS/NZ relationship means we have most of the same things but I am wondering if I would be entitled to childcare and any rebate over there? Also if anyone has any websites they know of that would be great. My DS is starting 3yo next year and I am wondering also if the NZ education is the same as ours, so DS would still go into the same grade at school than as he would if he stayed in AUS.

    TIA

You can get something like 30 hours of child care free or subsidised I think. And generally comparing my NZ family with what we pay it is cheaper over there. I think they do have the 3 year old and 4 year old kindy and school starts at 5.

I think they start school when they turn 5.

Where in NZ would you be?

It would be Auckland. I got a bit confused looking on their education website.

Re the childcare, are Australians eligible for that as well?

    Thanks, very helpful

I am from nz but didnt have my kids whilst there so my info may not be 100% correct re child care.
I don't believe they have a child care rebate as such but you can get 20 hours(or somewhere around that amount) of free kindy a week.
Inregards to school they usually start school on their 5th birthday. Otherwise the only difference schooling wise is that nz has an extra year of schooling so it goes to year 13.

You should definitely ask the question regarding the sorry 20 hours a week (not 30). I would think so as the other subsidies specify that you must be a permanent resident.

Thanks heaps guys that's awesome. I generally expect we won't get any rebate on CC but 20 hrs of kindy would be fantastic.

In regards to location, when we were over their last month I really likes the Mission Bay Area. Any other areas that are good to cater for a young family with 2 young kids?

My main concern is making sure my nearly 4yo is stimulated and can make friends by going to kinder.

    I'm a kiwi bubhubber
The website linked above is a good source.
I have lived in Auckland up until last year and now live 2.5 hours out of Auckland.
Above poster is correct...in nz you start on or just after your 5th birthday.
Will try and answer any other qs... I currently have a 7 year old and 4 year old...
