Default will baby have red hair ??

I'm due with my first the 30th of December and just wondering what the chances are that she will have red hair. I'm pale with red hair but the father is aboriginal with dark skin and dark hair. Is red hair even possible ?

Red hair is possible. My granny had very red hair and so did all 3 of her children. My mum therefore has very red hair but none of her 5 kids do. Myself and one of my sisters have natural reddish highlights through our hair but none of us are actual redheads.

    Possible yes, likely no.

My DH is fair with red hair and I'm fair with dark brown hair.

Both my DD 2.5 and DS 9 weeks both have light brown hair.

Red hair is a recessive gene which often skips a generation.

Do you hope bub does or doesn't have red hair?

I'm grateful they didn't get red hair, not because I dont love it, but because red heads - especially boys always have a hard time. In this day in age there's no tolerance for derogatory names for people of different backgrounds or religions, yet the nickname ranga still gets used and it's sooooo wrong!

My 10 month DS has bright red hair, blue eyes and pale skin… both DH and I have brown hair and eyes. No one in either of out families have red hair that we know of. So anythings possible we meet a couple the other day with a young baby with red hair blue eyes the same as DS… the father was fair and had red hair but the month was Asian… she was amazed

Oh and the first thing the doctor said when he was born was "you have a ranga" lol

I'm personally hoping she does not end up with red hair but in the end her hair color doesn't really matter to me as long as she's healthy , I'm just thinking that because my partner is aboriginal that is not very likely he would carry the recessive red hair gene.

    Possible but unlikely.

You need a gene from both mum & dad to have red hair...so bub will only have red hair if the dad carries the gene and passes it on to bub.

Indigenous genes aren't as strong as say someone from Nigerian ancestry. So it's likely you could get a child with red hair whereas with a Nigerian father there'd be much less or no chance. My cousin has red hair and his Dad has a very strong indigenous heritage.

Gosh imagine if she has red hair, brown eyes AND olive skin!!! how stunning would that be? Genetics is a strange and interesting science. While unlikely, it defiantly is possible. I have seen a gorgeous indigenous red head before and was amazed to discover her hair was natural (or so she claimed to me anyway).... and even if she doesn't have red hair herself maybe her children will?

I have blonde hair and brown eyes. Dh has dark brown and hazel eyes. One of my children has brown hair, brown eyes and the other is strawberry blonde with blue eyes.... apparently with dh and my mix, we only had a minute chance of having a blue eyed child and yet thats what we ended up with... I find genetics so facinating

I just don't want her to end up with pale skin & red hair like me.
