Default Son starting prep in 2015-what does he need to know?

My 5 year old son will be starting prep next year and he still cannot write his name (or anything) he can write a few letters and that's it. My girls could at least write their names before starting. He can count to 100 (though gets muddled up), can recognise his name if he sees it, knows colour, shapes etc. he can get himself dressed and all that. I'm worried if his new teacher will get the class to write things and he won't be able to
It seems he wants to learn but gives up to easily if he can't do it. So what things are expected? He isn't in daycare yet but I am going to be putting him into one two days a week from next week up until school ( more to socialize)..

    Thanks

As a prep teacher I am saying please don't stress! He will get there in his own time :-) if he can recognise his name that will be a big help. Usually at the start of term we assess where all the kids are in terms of knowing colours, counting, letters etc. so we can plan accordingly. My last class ranged from children not recognising ANY letters, numbers or colours to kids who were reading. We make sure that tasks are appropriate for the ability so don't worry about him being made to write. I always asked my kids to have a go (just making marks on paper was fine) and then they would tell me what it 'said' so I could write it with them.
