    First 2 no. Only because the mattress we used for the 1st 2 didnt fit the cot we bought for dd3. Dd3 was/is still in her cot so we had to buy a new one for dd4.

    There was a theory many years ago that old mattresses released a toxic smell or product that could be linked to SIDS, but it was debunked some time ago.

    The recommendation is still for a clean firm mattress and the difficulty with 2nd mattresses from an unknown source is you may not know if the mattress is clean, firm etc.

    It's been at least three years since I saw on the SIDS website that secondhand mattresses weren't a risk, so I'd say it's quite an old thing.

    I'd believe that - I would have read it when I was pregnant with number 1. I'm glad it's not a risk - makes me feel better about not getting a new one.

    Eerrrrmm..... our cot mattress has now seen 5 kids. There is nothing wrong with it, never occurred to me we needed a new one.
