    Default Need honest opinions!

I've just been for my 20 week morphology ultrasound and I have been left feeling very anxious and upset.

The ultrasound technician wouldn't tell us anything in regards to the baby, but from what I can see from the pictures, my little boy quite possibly has a cleft lip.

Is there anyone here with any experience with ultrasounds and/or cleft lips? I'd like to know if others think this may be a cleft lip on my boy. I have a family history of cleft lip on my mothers side of the family which also worries me.

Thanks in advance, from a very stressed, anxious mum

I had the same issue with my ultrasound tech at my 12w NT scan with twins. She was very covert so I started questioning her as I knew that big black blobs in the stomach area weren't normal. Turned out that one of the babies had a blocked bladder.
On your ultrasound you can clearly see the nostrils and below them the lip does seem to be misshaped and there is darkness which indicates no solid area. But I would have thought a specialist would have met with you if it is a cleft lip. When will you speak to someone regarding the US? Did they let you leave without speaking to you?
I am in disbelief that the tech would leave it at that without following up.
Please keep me posted as I know what it's like to leave without a positive outcome

Try not to stress. You don't know for certain yet. When is your appointment to discuss scan results with your care provider?

Also, if your baby does have a cleft lip, surgeons do amazing things, they can do a lot to correct them.

Thank you for the responses. The ultrasound technician said nothing at all, and when I asked if everything was ok he said I'll have to speak to my gp. So I left there feeling full of questions and worry. My next appointment is at the hospital this Wednesday and I think they will have a copy of today's report, so I will most likely know more then.

I know nothing about cleft lip/palate and I am so worried about feeding issues and having to put bub through surgery. I feel so awful for my baby if it does in fact end up being a cleft lip/palate.

What a fantastic tech (please note sarcasm). I would have asked to speak to someone as the stress involved whilst waiting to see someone regarding results is unnecessary. I went to a private clinic so saw a specialist straight after my US.
Can you make an appt with your GP tomorrow? I would try. It will lessen the stress on you & bubba.
Also, don't feel bad if it does end up being the case. It's no ones fault. And there are wonderful surgeons out there. xx

He was such a crap technician. He really hurt my belly just doing the scan. I think I'll wait until Wednesday as my DH will be able to come along with me then to get the results, and I really need his support right now.

    I just don't like using the term "baby" if it's a he/she!!
Well HE will be lovely no matter what! My little chap had trisomy 18 (as did one of my brothers) but he looked so perfect when I laid eyes on him (I lost the twins at 15w as my waters broke & I had to terminate).
I'm also a nanny so I just have love for all little people.
It's a shock when you think something isn't right with your little person but I promise it will be okay 😊

I had scans at the public hospital and I was NEVER told anything. It's their protocol at that hospital. The tech does the scan, it's given to a senior dr to review and sign off on, then it's sent to the ob (I was private) who discusses it.
It was extremely frustrating, especially when you're concerned. But I understand why they do it.
