Thats what an imprint is. I used to work in a hotel, we would only do the imprint for $5 most of the time unless it was some who had a history of skipping out with charges (we had flight crew staying who did this regularly). So say you have $500 in your account and an imprint has been taken for $100 if you check your account it will say account balance $500, available funds $400 (or something along those lines) for a few days until the imprint expires. This was in 2004 so it's not a new procedure.
We've always paid our bill, I think it depends on the hotel, we stay in many and certain chains take imprint only, whilst others will take cash out.
