    Default Toddler hitting baby sister

What do you do when your toddler hits their baby sibling? DS is 2.5yo and DD is 6 months old. Today I caught him repeatedly slapping her face and I nearly lost my cool. It was a first time, so I didn't know how to react or to discipline him. It really caught me off guard. I'd like tips for what to do if it happens again. Any suggestions?

I don't smack and tend to use lots of positive reinforcement and repetition to teach him things, and it works quite well. His language is good, he understand what we say to him, and is starting to learn 3-4 word sentences.

We just repeat over and over again "gentle, hands are for hugs not for hitting". Then we show him how to be gentle. Then if he hits bub we make him say sorry and give him a kiss. It's taken a while but it really works.

Try putting him in a time out away from you and bub for 5 mins (like in your bedroom and closing the door). Make a big fuss over bub so he can hear you but don't give him any attention.

When he does do something remotely nice to his sister go crazy with kisses and cuddles for him and heaps of praise for being an awesome big brother. Hopefully he'll get the message that being nice means he gets attention. Worked for my 3 yr old ds and 1 yr old dd
