My DS turned 7 not long ago and some of the things i got him that he took a liking to included a metal detector (about $40 from the national geographic shop),a science kit where you can make gross things like snot, tadpoles, fart putty, etc.., a bow and arrow (kid friendly kind lol).

Things that were not a hit were microscope, night vision goggles, and a craft box.
