Default Wife and mine's first pregnancy

My wife is 5 weeks 4 days pregnant with our first and we had our first ultrasound yesterday with mixed results, there was a nice looking yolk and sac however no little un, the guys at the ultrasound place assured us its normal and abit of research also shows that anywhere between 5-8 weeks is when you can see it, I have to put the reassuring face on because my wife is a worrier and I don’t want her to stress out, however im still nervous and worried, just got to take it one day at a time until the next visit in two weeks. Also is paying for the ultrasounds normal? We paid $111 but after talking to family and previous births they never payed for them, im obviously happy to pay for them for the sake of the little fella/girl however if we can save some money then its all for the best.

Definitely no need to worry yet. I never had an early ultrasound and I'm glad I didn't, it would have made me worry more. Also I paid for all my ultrasounds and I paid a lot more than that, $200-250 (usually got about $60 back from Medicare though). Had 3 scans last pregnancy and 2 so far for this one but I probably won't need another one.

    Hi,
Were you sent that early for an US for any particular reason? Normally the doctor would send you at around 7/8 weeks or 12 weeks.
    All sounds normal.
We paid for ours too (we went private), I am not sure if those in public get them for free.

The doc just gave us a referral and we went, I suppose we could have waited but being both first timers thought ok we'll go, I don't think it was communicated correctly or she thought there was a chance we could see the fetal pole and thought It would be great for us to look at it. Cant wait to see the little one and its heartbeat so keen to tell the world too, told my parents and wifes parents

I know both US places I go to check why you are coming and how far along you are before they let you book an appointment.
For a dating/viability scan they wouldn't see you before 6.5-7 weeks.

It's perfectly normal that you didn't see much. Wait another 5 weeks and the difference will be breath taking

When we went into to do the US she asked how far we are and we said about 5 weeks, she did state it maybe to early to see anything so she did a normal US then the internal one, both could only see the sac and yolk, I thought that was amazing in itself!

Congratulations! Sorry that this has caused you a bit of worry. Do not go back any earlier then 7 weeks at the earliest. Or even wait until 12 weeks if you plan on having the first trimester screening done. This might be a great little reminder to you to ask heaps of questions about everything in pregnancy. Why are we doing this? Pros and cons of doing/not doing it? If your care provider is not more then happy to discuss all this with you then I suggest looking for a better care giver!
I'm not sure if this works for everyone but when I was feeling a little nervous in the first few weeks of my first pregnancy I took a few home pregnancy tests 2 or 3 days apart and you can see the line getting darker (as your hormone levels go up). This eased my mind and it might for your wife too.
    Good luck x

Yeah she did say she wanted to do a test each day, but I thought if something happened it would still show positive and she would be more devastated

Yeah that's true @terryg once your HCG is over a certain level which it generally is by 5and a half weeks, the lines will just be dark and speaking as a POAS addict myself I wouldn't encourage daily home testing - it'll just raise her anxiety significantly, especially because as you point out even if things aren't going well the lines will stay dark. This is because although HCG goes up fast, it goes down really slowly.

You were sent for an ultrasound way too early. I've got one on Monday at 6+4 and even that's early so try not to stress and book in again in a week or a week and a half if you can hold out that long.

If you paid for the scan it means it wasn't a bulk billing place and for an early scan that's better - you want a really experienced sonographer.

My books all say that five weeks is to early to see the heartbeat
