@BH-community you make me feel so old - only 6 years ago for a school trip

DD's new Japanese Language teacher is not going to take them to Hiroshima at all, where as the teacher who has just left (a former Japanese national) had it included in the visit. DD won't be visiting with school, we are going ourselves as the school trip was put off until next year - at the end of the year when she will be overwhelmed with the final Year 12 exams.

I'll start to practice making cranes now, we have been given some lovely origami paper by our last exchange student - I think the little ones can make some too for us to leave at the Sadako memorial as well. I just read that the last crane ever folded by Sadako Sasaki now resides in a memorial at Ground Zero - donated by her elderly brother. Now that is touching.

It was great, was a half day tour and took in most of the sites we wanted to see. Best part was it ended up just being the two of us and the guide, so really personal and informative.

In Tokyo, make sure you check out the food halls in the big department stores, they are amazing.

Thank you! I love the idea of a bicycle tour. I saw that our hotel in Kyoto hired bicycles but for some reason I had it my head that the streets were so busy and a bike wouldn't be a good idea.

Another place I loved was Mount Koya (or maybe it's called Koya San). You get there by cable car and it's a serene, spiritual place. You can stay at a Buddhist monastery and their vegetarian food is fantastic! (I'm not vego)

    I'm jealous!
I just looked up Koyasan and wow! The walk through to the Okunien Temple looks amazing, we are going to have to visit here now too. Thank you for the suggestion!

The cemetery at Koya San is amazing.

PM me your email address if you like, I can send you some great tips my friend has made after having done about 10 trips to Japan!

Also Hiroshima was one of my favourite cities we visited. It reminded me of Melbourne with its casual, cool, modern boutiques. Very laid back.

Took over an hour ... lol. Though I've sped up now, made a few more to practice and DD2 was distraught I was 'making birds for other children' so I had to make sure she woke up with one on her bedside table.

    Exciting! Well, not for me

Another tip - make sure you check which trains you're actually able to use the JR pass on. Some bullet trains don't count (says it inside the JR pass) and no subways count. If you do have to go on subways at all, they're ridiculously cheaper than any transport in Brisbane, so you shouldn't be too out of pocket. The bullet trains will be way more expensive though, as you probably already know.
