Default Gah! Owe the ATO $$ Q. Re Car expenses

This happens to me every year. I just don't understand!

Last year and this year mileage payment appeared on my group cert so I have to put it down as income which means Im taxed on it. I'm sure in pervious years this was not the case.

Would I be better not claiming mileage from work and doing it all the end of the year as a deduction? Seems like I would.

You still claim your kms thru ato. Someone correct me if im wrong. For example I claim 96 kms each week thru work. They pay me 76 cents per kilometre . At end of yr its on my work group certificate as an allowance.
When I do my tax return that income is put into the allowance section but in the deductions section I claim my kms and end up with a deduction dollar amount.

I hope I'm not doing it wrong

If you have mileage allowance from work, you need to put this in your tax return as taxable income (there is no option here). However, you can also claim a deduction for the km's driven which should net off against the allowance, resulting in little to no difference in your net tax.

Oh wow, thanks for the replies I only just came back to check this thread.

So over 2000km I've travelled for work I just put in as a deduction?!? That's great news!

I haven't kept a log but I should be able to print all my expense claims as evidence for where I've been.

I cannot believe I didn't know this, I have paid tax bills the last couple of years what a moron!
