Immigration officials at Bangkok's international airport have stopped two Australian couples from leaving the country with their surrogate babies.

The ABC understands the same-sex couples, including one which was travelling with the surrogate mother, were prevented from flying out on Thursday afternoon.

Police have ordered immigration not to allow surrogate babies out of the country unless there is a court order, the ABC has been told.

@finallyready I understand what you are trying to say and I think it is a good point. How we value babies (born or unborn) with disabilities is one of the bigger issues raised by this particular baby's case.

The ABC has uncovered another case of an Australian couple abandoning a surrogate baby, this time in India.

The case from 2012 involves a set of twins, born in India, via a surrogate to Australians who had gone through a surrogacy agency.

Chief Justice Bryant says consular officials revealed to her there was pressure from Australia to provide a visa to allow them to return one baby to Australia, as the commissioning parents did not want both babies.

It is understood the choice of baby was based on gender.

Chief Justice Diana Bryant was told by consular officials at the time about the case and she says they were deeply traumatised.

"They told me the surrogate mother had given birth to twins and the Australian couple only wanted one of the children," Chief Justice Bryant said.

"I don't know whether it was a boy or a girl. They already had one sex and they didn't want the other child.
ETA: Fairfax is reporting the parents took the baby girl and left their baby boy in India.

We need new surrogacy laws alright... To crack down on dip$hit parents like this that think they can do anything because they do it overseas.

    I completely agree.

As far as I'm concerned, people like this are not longing for a child. It's like picking a puppy or kitten to them. It's absolute bullsh*t and it ruins the experience for parents who use surrogacy for the right reasons.
