    So hubby basically says you can say there is a pattern of multiplying by 3 towards the negative and positive but that wouldn't be a rule.

    I don't think so, because if x is negative it still can't work. Unless I've misunderstood what you mean.

    I can't work it out either. The rules that would seem to work for the negatives don't work for the positives. I can't see anything that works for the whole set. I'd love to know the answer when you find out.
