Default Camper winter are we crazy

We're heading to nz on a few weeks to visit family.
We have hired for part of the trip a campervan ( a van type one not much bigger than a sedan type thing) with basic kitchen and double bed where kitchen table is.
We did this as a) we have basic kitchen facilities when driving with an 11 month old and b) it worked out cheaper than hiring a car lol.
We are mostly using it as a vehicle however was planning on spending 1 night at a park on a powered site. We will have a heater but that's only going to be small I imagine.
Apparently last night it was -1 but felt like -5 are we crazy for doing this one night?

We went camping towards the end if may with my sisters family, they had a heater in their tent which they only put on at the beginning of the night, apparently it heated the tent really quickly. It wasn't anywhere near -1 but a van is only small so I reckon the grater should heat it fairly well. Just make sure you have plenty of Doonas, blankets and jumpers!!

I went to NZ on my honeymoon in August 06 and there were plenty of campervans on the road. I am sure they have heating. Are you going to the north or south island?
