    Default Moving to Central Coast

    Hi Mums
My hub and I are seriously contemplating a move to the central coast after finally conceding that our beloved northern beaches does not match our borrowing capacity! We are pre approved, ready to buy and looking at properties to purchase up to $520K. So far we like the look of Ettalong, Kariong, Empire Bay, Saratoga. Not much time spent actually up there yet, (we've just done our first round of open houses) so we just don't know what we are doing really! It's all internet research at this point and google is no help at all...searches for 'good suburbs on the central coast' yields a confusion of outdated info and crazy anecdotes eg. 'Domestic violence capital of NSW' 'bored drunk teenagers', 'ghetto' and my favourite 'Mt Druitt by the sea'. Hardly enticing! I also read good stuff too but it's hard when just about every suburb cops a bad rap.
Are there any Mums on here who have made the jump from the beaches up to the coast, and if so, where should I look?
Ideally we would like to be close to water, parks, shops but I guess our main thing is good local schools and daycare as well as nice neighbourhoods and low crime. We have a 5 yo and 3 yo. Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello, i'm from the central
Coast the areas you mentioned are lovely, wamberal, terrigal, erina, avoca are all quite nice as well.

I'm further north towards the tuggerah end of the coast, our beaches are at norah head but it probably wouldnt be as nice as what you're after.

Thanks zombie eyes! I forgot to mention that we will still be needing to commute to Inner Sydney and Northern Beaches daily by car for work, so something that isn't too far from the freeway is appealing. I looked at a house at Avoca yesterday and although really nice appeared to be hard work to get in and out of on a Saturday so I'm guessing weekday peak would be far worse? That's why Kariong looked ok but I've only seen properties online and driven thru it on my way to the freeway.

I made the move but ended up coming back to Sydney. There was a lack of opportunities up there and the travel became too much back and forth to Sydney every day.

There are a few shady characters in Gosford and Woy Woy but Saratoga and Empire Bay are quite nice areas.

I honestly have no regrets leaving and don't miss it much, but I am a city person and really missed being in Sydney. If you think it is a good move for you and your family then go for it!

Oh wow, commuting, yeah it wouldnt be a wise move to move to terrigal or avoca then, the traffic is really bad from gosford right through to there.

    Hmmm.

All i can suggest is make some day trips up and time your run, and also get a feel for the place.

Tbh theres not a lot up here. If you were moving for a change of pace then it'd be good... But i find it a struggle to find fun things to do with the kids, no where to really have an adventure.

Default Central Coast move - how did it go?

    Hi,

We are currently overseas but previously living on the Northern Beaches (also priced out as per this thread). We will be looking to move to the Central Coast and was just wondering how "ocdgeorge" (who started the thread) went with to move.

Can I assume you are settled in there now? Where did you end up - or why not?

Be great to hear from someone who has already been through what we are about to.

Preliminary research is indicating (for us) around East Gosford would be good balance of access to train (for wife to get to work at Macquarie uni) and access beaches as well (surfing/kiting for Papa sanity).

Can manage 500 (OK) to 600K (tops)

In a perfect world we'd love to buy something before moving back and be able to move straight in (have 3yo boy and one still incubating) BUT I think we realistically have to rent for 3-6 months to feel it out.

Any comments would be tremendously appreciated!

    Many thanks,
    Steve

    Hi there Steve

Yes we are still here! We purchased a house in Bensville and moved up in September 2014. Do not miss the NB one bit (apart from our old friends). Everything is on offer here, and it is a fantastic area for kids. People are great, we have made lots of friends and wish we had done this years ago! For a similar vibe to NB I would be looking at Bensville, Saratoga, Davistown, Empire Bay,Macmasters, Copacabana, Avoca. I know prices have gone up since we purchased but you would surely get a decent 3 bed house, maybe a fixer upper in your price range up here. Most suburbs mentioned have Woy Woy as the closest station. The subs furthest away would be 20-30 minutes from the station being Avoca, Macs, Copa. Empire Bay and Bensville 15 minutes max. Saratoga and Davistown you would best go to Gosford station , that would take 20 mins again but depends on the time you leave. East Gosford has nice parks and cafes and is 15 mins from the beach but I must admit we never looked there for a house. Good luck with your search, it certainly is a good time to buy with such low interest rates you can lock in a nice rate and enjoy the capital growth

    [QUOTE=ocdgeorge;8431816]Hi there Steve

Thank you so much ocdgeorge! My apologies for not thanking you sooner. We had a week away pretty much straight after I posted the question/thread.

Your input is tremendously helpful. At this stage it looks like a first week of September move back to Sydney and likely into a short term rental in one of the areas you mentioned to then find a place to buy. As much as we'd like to buy one before (and move straight in), we really have to be able to look at potential places "physically".

    Many, many thanks again.

    Hi again ocdgeorge,
We have decided we will initially try and rent a furnished place around Woy Woy to Umina and take things from there to buy a place. We really need to be in there. Do you know much about some of the local childcare centers - good/one's to avoid?

We will have to start inquiring soon to try and book mini-me in for lat August...

    Many thanks again!

    Hi Steve,

For long daycare try Wallaby st early learning Blackwall (near Woy Woy) or for Preschool definitely Pretty Beach Preschool (my daughter goes here, it is fantastic)
Don't know any bad ones as such but those are two I can say are very very good.

For a rental you would be best to try Umina over Woy Woy (no offence to anyone). It has good pockets and average ones generally South Umina is really nice. Blackwall, Ettalong and Booker Bay are also in the area you mentioned and are lovely, all close to the water.

    Good luck!
