I'm not sure if it would work. I can see drug addicts having no money to buy their next hit so turning to crime to fund it. I think possibly a compulsory, fully funded live-in rehab program for those who apply for the dole and are found to have drugs in their system could be an option. But then that's not going to suit single mothers. There needs to be a holistic approach rather than just taking their money away, IMO.

I think it's ridiculous. Let's marginalise and humiliate an already marginalised group in society even more.

    Gah I hate this government.

So speaking of centrelink, did you know that in the NT people on benefits are given half in cash, then the other half goes in a keeper account that can be accessed via a green card at specific shops for specific things (clothes, food, bills). If the shop is not compatible with the green card you have to ring centrlink and they will pay the bill for you.

I think if they want to test people on the dole they should test everyone who receive ANY money from the government

I don't really think it will work but I'm not totally against it

You must be talking about the basics card Indigoj. They call it income management.

In theory it has some merit but it won't work in practice. Drug addiction is a vicious cycle that is extremely difficult to break this is a very simplistic view that won't work.

    Agree with previous posters.
Addiction is a complex issue and simply removing someone's income or benefits doesn't remove their addiction.
This doesn't include any real, evidence based, therapeutic intervention

What a horrible, nasty government this is.
As a PP said, if we want to drug test dole recipients then we should drug test all people who receive some sort of government payment and that includes corporate welfare (hello Rinehart) and all public servants (hello Abbott).

Geesh, the amount of perks and benefits the politicians get (eg, life long very generous pensions, flights etc) they have a great way of pointing the finger at the most needy and blaming them for some apparent 'budget emergency'. FFS - I'm so over them thinking I'm stupid.

But based on the article this is suggesting all recipients are drug tested irrespective of whether there is a past history with drug addiction.

    I think that's incredibly offensive.
