    Default Centrelink Debt: Help

    Hi all,

I am a newbie to the forum and really scared at the moment cos I have just had a call from Centrelink to tell me about a huge debt.

The person who called me from centrelink said they will be settiling this at an administrative level. Does this mean they wont prosecute?

How does the DPP decide about prosecuting.

Anyone been in a similar position please help

Not sure sorry as I have never been in your situation. But I guess it comes down to the amount of debt and how/why the debt accumulated and was it intentional on your behalf.

Might be useful to get some independent advice from the National Welfare Rights Network. You can find your local office at https://www.welfarerights.org.au

    They give free legal advice.

Centrelink will prosecute when the amount is over $5000. Doesn't matter what they say, it automatically happens. I suggest when they request an interview see a lawyer beforehand.

    Hi Jaimee,

Why would they go out of their way to tell me its going to be done at an administrative level? Do you know of any lawyers in Sydney - i have no idea at all.

I owed them 3.5k I've been paying it back for almost 4 years, it will be paid back by June!

They called me first to tell me they were looking into it further and would call me back once they worked out his much I owed them.
