Ironically he was probably was protesting against HECS (I think he's around my age and I know I was protesting that at that time)

Sorry, genuine question because I honestly have no idea. Why the protest against HECS?

When HECS was first brought in no one knew what it would involve really. Up til then higher education was free. I remember my parents doing degrees in their 40s at uni because they were interested in topics. They both have degrees in foreign languages as a result of free education.

HECS was extremely radical when it came about, and people like me who were raised to believe education was a right not a privilege were horrified that we were now expected to pay. It was a real concern that uni fees would increase massively. It was also tied in with the removal (from memory) of payments for students living away from home.

In a nutshell it just went against everything up until then we thought Australia was for - free education being a big part of that. So yes we demonstrated. Hard.

What scares me is that free education is a distant memory. Politicians make these changes and generations just adapt and accept them.
