I just read the speech. wow. It was great. Reminiscent of Paul Keating - the labor of old. Bill shorten has been really impressive.

It was a great speech, ideological but no alternatives. LNP will be all over that, ALP offered no alternatives to the budget aside from saying they will block it. To be taken seriously as an alternative government they need real policies.

This was a speech in direct response to the budget. Labor have made their policies abundantly clear over and over.

I was referring specifically to policies that will reduce the deficit, which I know is not a budget emergency but I do think the general populace expect to see either increased revenue ******s or cuts to programs. I saw an interview with Bill Shorten on the ABC just after the budget reply and he outlined 10 billion of savings measures that Labor planned to block and when asked directly what alternatives Labor has to replace the lost savings he said they have not worked it out yet.

Don't get me wrong, I am a staunch Labor supporter (and member of the party) but to get in at the next election, I do think they need to show either increased revenue +/- reduced spending to be seen as a real alternative. The debt dogma is too heavily entrenched in the minds of a lot of people to just not address it.

Yep I agree they need to provide an alternative. But their ideas seem to be to tax the top 2%, and billion dollar companies and to take longer to get back to surplus by making less cuts.

One big saving could be the axing of the chaplaincy program at a quarter of a billion

Like this....some fantastic ideas here, show people savings can be made without driving low income earners into the ground (of course a lot of these won't be popular with high income earners)

Don't even get me started on that chaplaincy program!!!!!!
