I know and that's what I love about Perth. Melbourne has terrible beaches, weather and lots of bored teenagers who desperately need a bit of sun and sand.

But I can still miss Melbourne restaurants.

I love Hellenic Republic but not so special IMO. Great for big family/friends catch up. Upper style canteen.
    Pretty loud.
Not sure on budget...we are all happy to spend about $100 exl alcohol (not many drinkers among us).

Have a look at Easy Tiger.

They do delicious modern Thai food and cater very well for vegetarian. Their banquet is $75 or $95 pp.

And it's in Collingwood so not far from Fitzroy

    Vue De Monde is awesome!
Number 8 at Crown is also really good.

We went to Easy Tiger for my birthday last year...was amazing!

I love you guys lol....i am making a list as DH and are now finally able to go out once a month without the kids so we are going to go to one of these each month! I might even take the kids to some...a few allergy issues have stopped us eating out much with them but i reckon i could order smartly and be ok.

I thought of another nice one we went to a couple years ago - Union Dining in Richmond. Yum.

And Jacques Reymond's 3 kids opened a French bistro in South Yarra recently, and he is about to open a French gastro pub too. They're called Bistro Gitan and L'Hotel Gitan

Check our Brooks on the city. So pretty. French chef

Vue de Monde is a little too sophisticated for me, the kind of place where you don't even want to touch the plate and you eat each "dish" in 3 mouthfuls
Would personally pick Cuttler and Co over vue de monde.

Union dining looks great....my DH will love it i think so will save it for us lol

I have given my friends/family a vote of:

    Hellenic Republic
    Number 8
    Cumulus
    Gingerboy
    Melba

There are about 10 of us...so hopefully there will be a clear winner

Great picks! If it were up to me I'd do a banquet at Hellenic - easy, festive and guaranteed deliciousness! I dream about the taramasalata dip and the saganaki with figs.
