Default Verbal abuse from strangers, how do you respond?

I was at a supermarket today and having trouble finding what I was looking for. I happened to detour in the same direction as a stranger who started to accuse me of stalking him. I defended myself in a non confrontational way but he started swearing, calling me names and making racist remarks. Normally I just ignore these people but in this case I decided to defend myself. Dh reckons I should have just ignored him but I am finding these days the desire to stand up for myself. If it had been a potentially dangerous situation eg if person looked like they were drunk or on drugs and just wanting a fight then I would definitely ignore and walk away.

Anyway, have you been in a similar situation and do you ignore or respond?

I ignore them. You never know what you're dealing with. He sounds mentally ill.

It depends on my mood! Most times I'd just roll my eyes and go pffft and walk off, but get me in a bad mood and I'll turn it around and throw abuse back.

Yes true. I am normally the timid one and avoid trouble. He just acted like a bully and a jerk and he just seemed to get more annoyed when I didn't retaliate with swearing but just smiled and asked him why he didn't call the police and report me if he really thought I was stalking him.

Yeah one of those days for me today. Getting a bit of pressure at work which is probably why I am getting sick of being pushed around!

Yep. I'm a shocker. I just can't seem to back away or ignore it. My dh always laughs if someone road rages at me or gives me the finger that "they don't know who they're messing with" or if someone ever kidnapped me he wouldn't care because they would soon return me

The stalking part I probably would of ignored or even apologised for, but as soon as the racial slurs started I would have lost my sh!t. There is never, under any circumstance, any need to go that low.

This. If people put it out there they have to expect it back. Usually witty comments confuse people who just sling swear words or racist insults too.

I enjoy confusing people. Because they usually just come back with something ingenious like "well your just a c*#t anyway"

    Well done sir. Well done

Also the racist stuff. Freaking ridiculous. Are you kidding me? Your so dull the only thing that you can insult me about is the color of my skin? Clap clap mate clap clap.

Also... you just followed him into another Isle? Does he know how grocery stores work?
