    Default ''I'm not racist ...but...''

today on kyle and jackie o show they did a segment in which people call in and either defend their suburb or say why they dont like one.
a women called and said that her family bought a house in a certain suburb and ''i'm not racist ...but..its nice living in an area where everyone is white /austalian..'' .. Wouldnt this be classified as racist thinking?? other people have started a sentence in a similar manner and what ever comes after the ''but'' usually sounds racist..

As a general rule, anyone who utters the phrase "I'm not racist, but..." is racist.

If you have to say "I'm not racist, but..." Before you make a statement, there's a very good chance you're about to say something racist.

And yes, OP, saying "I'm not racist but it's nice living in an all white suburb" is definitely racist IMO.

Yeah, I don't get it either? I grew up in the suburbs in brissy in the 80's and in our neighbourhood we had a huge Chinese family, a Yugoslavian family and a Philippine family.....all us kids were friends and it didn't matter to us they came from another country and spoke another language, we were fascinated by them and their yummy food!
I don't have anything against race....but when ppl start pushing their religion I guess that can make ppl seem racist?? That's what it seems like these days anyway...

To be honest, and I know I will probably get bashed on bubhub for this, but I can understand her thinking, even though I PERSONALLY do not agree with it. (And yes, she is racist).

What would have been the most correct thing to say is I guess, everyone around us has the same cultural background, and I really enjoy that.

It's like me....I don't like to see myself as classist or ideologuist, but I do enjoy living in areas with similar economic situations, or similar values (hence why I love where I live right now, also it's bloody beautiful!!!)

No good ever follows a "but".

    I don't mean to offend you...but...
This isn't an attack on you...but...

A wise person once told me that when you put a "but" in a sentence it totally negates the first half of the sentence. The person listening only hears the second half. It was in regards to giving feedback but it does apply all round!
