Default Recommend me a new vacuum cleaner!

My vacuum cleaner is sh!t really, cheap and nasty & is on it's last legs, it barely sucks even with a good clean out and always over heats. I want to buy something where you get your money's worth in both how long they last & quality in use. Any suggestions as we're going to buy one tomorrow Also would you recommend one that's free standing(all in one tpye) or one where you drag it around with you? Sorry I don't know what they're called :P

I have a Dyson animal DC44. Got it in July last year and I love it
Still have to haul it around but it's so much better. With the cheap crappy vacuum it would take 45 minutes every 2 days to get my carpets reasonable. Now it takes 10 minutes twice a week love it!

My dyson on her last legs still out does our elcheapo in a heartbeat. She'd have to be over 6 or 7 years old. When I can afford to replace her I'm aiming for another dyson.
