When you are using a plural, you need to use 'fewer' ie 'There are fewer chocolates in the box since I wasn't at work today..' But it's very common to hear 'there are less chocolates...' I think that's the rule, anyway?

It's a pet peeve of mine.

Actually "a horrific..." is correct. It's not about whether there's an 'h' there or not; it's about phonetics. I.e. Does the 'h' sound like a vowel or a consonant?

    Example:
"I've been waiting for you for over *an* hour." (Vowel sound)

"I need to buy *a* horse." (Consonant sound)

So now you can like his grammar...if you want to ; )

I was waiting for DH to accidentally offer up an example - he does it all the time and it's a huge peeve of mine - but I found this instead:

Fewer refers to a number of items, less refers to volume. Eg less liquid, fewer chocolate bars.

Another way is to think whether you would say 'too much' or 'too many'. Too many peanuts, fewer peanuts. Too much water, less water.

On FB this morning from someone who has been repeatedly posting status updates about how they want a man in their life:

Decided I'd rather be on my own then deal with someone else's crap.

Keep driving past a local tattoo shop that opened recently and getting very annoyed when I see their signage..

    'Tattoo's and gifts'

Wouldn't you check before having signs made?!? Makes me not trust them for doing a tat with wording either..imagine if they made a mistake!
