    Red face Rice cereal!

Has anyone's bub had a reaction to rice cereal with cooled boiled water.
My bub has just started rice cereal this week (past three nights) and since that time has been more spewy, more pooey and irritable, had fevers and has developed a pink dotty rash. I took her to the docs this morning, and he told me to stop the rice cereal! Why???? Would she be allergic to it (there's not really anything in it...is there???)??? Although he reckons the spots and fevers are from a viral cause, why would I then have to stop the rice cereal if that is going to give her extra fluids? I think most of the symptoms are actually teething, as I can see her top two teeth under her gums, but the fever is a bit too high at 38.3degrees.

    Who knows!

    Hi Lis

No can't say I have had the problem, but I do have some thoughts on MAYBE why it is happening ...

I'm presuming that because you are starting solids, DD is 6 months old? and that is the classic time for bubs to start getting viral illnesses ... as your little one obviously is - the red dotty rash is a 'dead giveaway' ... and I am also presuming that she isn't quite ready for solids yet [don't worry, lots of bubbas go for months after the recommended 6 mths before getting interested in solids - with no problems]. At around 6 months the digestive enzymes necessary to digest solids come into play, but of course that can't possibly mean 'on the dot' of 6 months can it?? so maybe DD just needs another month or two to be ready.

The doctor probably said to stop giving her the rice cereal because of that reason ... maybe? [funny you weren't given that explaination tho' ] but also, when babies are sick they often do better on just breastmilk - easier for their bodies to cope with so they can recover from the illness.

I don't think you should worry at all if you have to hold off the solids for a while - as I said many do without any problems [eg our DD didn't eat until 11 months and she is the healthiest person I know .. now almost 3!]

    Good luck
