I still think you should just call the store manager, ask the question, mention that the staff member was quite abrupt to you - and move on!
It's not worth so much thought and energy.
I doubt many stores would say they are okay with customers testing products that are not designated 'testers'. It would give people the green light to go around spraying whatever they choose.
Yes, I'm sure ill be in there sooner than later with a sick child at the minute, so one way or another I will address it or the employee.
Believe me I'm not giving it so much thought and energy, the thread was brought up again today after I was happy to leave it where I left it yesterday.
I have other things to be dealing and apart from it coming up in here today I hadn't given it another thought.

Whether it's policy, not policy, right,wrong, stealing, not stealing the shop assistant shouldn't have been so rude, IMO.
I'd be tempted to ring the store manager to complain about the attitude of the staff if it were me.
