Default Ivf because of vasectomy is this the best way

    Asking for my cousin

Her partner had a vasectomy before she met her and now they want to try for a baby.

They've decided to do sperm retrieval over a reversal as it's been a long time since the vasectomy. I believe the procedure is called IVF-ICSI but the info I look at all talks about Ivf. But if my cousin has nothing wrong with her fertility can't they just do insamination?

Has anyone gone through this procedure or similar and can give us any info what so ever? She is completely lost and doesn't know where to start. Can a gp refer her to the right place or should she look up Ivf clinics? Would any of this be covered under Medicare? They are in Brisbane too if you know of anywhere that can help.

Thanks in advance for any help

I don't know anything about sperm retrieval, but we are doing our 4th ICSI cycle. DH has no issues, so makes a donation into a cup. The difference between IVF and ICSI is that the sperm is injected into the egg manually with ICSI.

Our GP gave us a referral for a fertility specialist when we'd been trying for 12 months, so you can go with who your GP recommends or window shop yourself.

Medicare and private health insurance covers about half of the cost. Our clinic is charging us $9150 this cycle for ICSI with assisted hatching. With our insurance excess of $500 we will be about $4500 out of pocket.

I hope that helps your cousin.

Oh, and she could probably do an IUI cycle instead of IVF/ICSI if she doesn't want to go through the drugs and egg collection. I have read that its not worth the cost of IUI cycles as they have a lower success rate. But I'm not sure about that, she would need to do some proper research on it.

Hi. My ex and I had my oldest child in this manner. I was 27 with no fertility issues. He had has his vasectomy a while ago and we did a but of investigation and decided to do ivf over reversal. You can't just do an insemination because the sperm they will retrieve from your cousins partner will be immature sperm, needs to be injected directly to the eggs via ivf/icsi. So we did an ivf cycle, took my eggs out, at the same time took sperm from my ex, injected his immature sperm into my eggs, Grew them for a few days then inserted a fertilised egg into me and two wks later I found out I was pregnant. The whole process took about two months and cost about $4000 out of pocket. Hope this helps x

I'm in the exact same boat as your cousin and my partner and I are just about to start the journey to find out if reversal or IUI is best. It's such a big decision and rather frustrating being so healthy and being on the wrong end of a decision someone made years before they met you! But this is what we do for love!
    Good Luck to your cousin

Hi, Kesha as said before you can do IUI because the sperm can't swim it needs to be injected in to the egg.
My husband had a vasectomy 13years before we tried getting it reversed. He tried two reversal and both never worked at all. So we ended up doing ivf ICSI. We now have two boys. Please research ivf clinics as it does a matter.
