    Question private OB/public hospital?

    Hello

I'm just curious if you can pick an private OB for your pregnancy care, but then choose to give birth at the public hospital?

Do you get to have an ultrasound each visit? What are the costs of each visit?
    Is it worth going public?

Thanks a buch! I'm a bit confused as to what care I want to go with and would love some input x

    Yes you can.

I think I paid all up around $3500 for the obstetrician. She did an ultrasound every appointment.

I also had to pay $1000 to use the public hospital. I was happy with the public hospital - I had my own room and bathroom. I didn't like that DP couldn't stay with me overnight to help with bub. I had a c-section so it was tough getting out of bed to nurse and change nappies.

Why did you have you pay staying at the public?

I would assume she went in as a private patient. Or just paid for a private room?

I had to pay due to being a private patient. Doesn't make sense to me, that I picked my own doctor yet had to pay for the privilege of using the public hospital but if I went through as public patient it's free.

Why penalize me for not clogging the system further with prenatal appointments.

Yeah that's ridiculous!! I was hoping to just pay for the OB visits but head in to public hospital and not pay lol
Obviously it doesn't work that way - boohoo!

You can do this at our local public The Mercy, and they don't charge if you are private, but you will be treated like any other public patient. Ie shared rooms etc. You MAY get a private room, but they are allocated by need first, so you might not either. The stay is 1 night for an uncomplicated vaginal birth and 3 for a c section. Pretty much takes away all the private perks LOL
We had to look into it because our LO looked to be coming too early for a private hospital at first, but in the end we made it to 35 weeks and had a week in private to recover.

You might want to check with the hospital. Sounds like it could be variable :-)
Your OB would probably know too

It all depends on which hospital you go to. I went to a public hospital as a private patient and didnt pay a cent. I paid my private OB all his payments.
