DS has two Play School apps on the iPad and they're both fantastic. They're also free and have no annoying ads.

My 2 & 4 DS's love endless alphabet and endless reader, Disney appisodes, Tozzle, the reading eggs apps are great for preschoolers.

Duck duck moose does great apps - wheels in the bus and trucks are favourites here. Also Old macdonald, monkeys on the bed and wiggles app.

The free playschool apps are great.
There are a couple of free wiggles apps but more for older toddlers (my 2 year old doesn't quite get them yet).
The free fisher price ones are also good, but the ladies voice gets on my nerves!
I also downloaded a free piano and free xylophone app which DS2 loves to bang around on.

If you want more distractions then download the abc iview app and you can show them shows from abc for kids.

My DS also loves Endless Alphabet and Endless Reader he is already copying the sounds from the letters and will point out letters to me and make their sounds he can match the letters to the words really well. We got Endless Alphabet when it was free but even with how much it costs now I would still purchase it as it is the best app we have. DS has been using it since about 14 months and is now almost 2.
