Default Best FS in Melb or Bris who specialises in fertility for ovarian cancer survivors.

    Hello All,

I was just wondering if anyone can recommend a good fertility specialist in Melbourne or Brisbane who specialises in treating Ovarian cancer survivors.

I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when I was 22 (I'm now 30) and had surgery to remove my right ovary (I still have my left ovary). I also had 3 cycles of BEP chemo. I am now well and truly pass the 5 year mark which means I'm officially cured and doctors have said in previous years that I would have a good a chance as any to have babies.

However, my husband and I have been trying to conceive for 18 months or so with no luck. We recently went to see my gyne/oconolgy specialist at the Mater and he referred me to a FS in Brisbane (Dr Yazdani) I have been told that I have very few eggs left because of the chemo and that I need to do IVF ASAP as I could experience premature ovarian failure within the next 10 years. Dr Yazdani seems really lovely but I wondered if anyone knew of a FS out there who specialises in treating people with a history of cancer (perhaps you have/had a similar story to me) Of course my DH and I want someone who is also compassionate and lovely. Too much to ask? I have done some research and Dr Kate Stern and Dr Lyndon Hale from MIVF seemed good. But then, its hard to know without meeting them.

We currently live in Cambodia but plan move back to Australia to do our first IVF cycle in April (hopefully) We are open to both Brisbane and Melbourne clinics. If any one can give me any sort of advice that would be hugely appreciated as it is difficult for me to access information from here.

    Thanks heaps.

Sounds like my FS would be perfect - Dr Lynn Burmeister in Melbourne. I hope this article link works (if not google her name and ovarian cancer)

She is so thorough with her testing. There is a thread on her here on bubhub in the IVF section.

Thank you for your quick response lemonpancakes. I'll def look into her. I've read a few posts here on bub hub re: Monash and they don't have the best reputation esp. Professor Gab Kovacs who, from this article, trained Dr Lynn Burmeister. Perhaps I'll have to do a bit more research. Thanks heaps :-)

No worries. I was going to say I've read (on bubhub) the opposite - that Monash are better than MIVF. Can I ask what you've read about Monash? Quite a few of the ladies in the Lynn thread came to her after unsuccessful cycles with MIVF (a few of them were quite unhappy with them). She's just more thorough with her testing I think.

I just had my first cycle with Lynn at Monash and was so impressed with how they ran everything. And I am now 8 weeks pregnant (yay!). She really is a clever doctor who doesn't waste time and is keen to do as much investigation that she can. I believe she's quite busy but her 2 lovely receptionists can put you on a waiting list for any earlier cancellations - I did this and got to see her for my first appointment the next day! Her staff are the warmest, most patient I've encountered. I can't stand snappy rude medical receptionists!

Good luck with it all, that's fantastic you've made a full recovery! Keep us posted on how it all goes!

Hi, sorry I don't know the answer to your initial question but I wanted to add that I am a Monash IVF patient and I've met a number of girls there who moved over from MIVF after what they considered to be poor treatment. I'm sure there are lots of opinions but I personally haven't heard anyone saying bad things about Monash.

I used Julie Lindstrom in Brisbane from City Fertility clinic, she is fabulous! I got pg on my first cycle & the nurses from the clinic all said she has the highest success rate.

Julie is very thorough, kind & honest. She really cares about her patients.

Hello Lemonpancakes, thanks for all the extra info. The thread that I came across re: Monash is attached below. I just looked at Dr Burmeister's website. She sounds great so I can imagine why there would be a waiting list. I'll try giving the clinic a call tomorrow. In the meantime I'll continue to do some research. N

Dr Warren De Ambrosis at QFG in Brisbane. Fantastic Dr & truly lovely man who will go above & beyond. My 2 babies probably wouldn't be here without him. Very popular, so there could be a waiting list. Good Luck
