I have to say though to all of you who are chucking up a stink about owners doing drive-bys and attending inspections - how about putting yourself in the owners shoes sometimes. Imagine having strangers living in a house that you have put your heart and soul into (not to mention cost you a bloody fortune). I have to tell you - after the horror stories I have heard from friends about their rental properties and damage etc. - i'd be doing a drive-by every now and then too (as is my right). Not sure if I would feel the need to attend inspections - but if an owner feels the need to do this, then I don't see a problem with it, since at the end of the day.... they own the house.
I agree, we're renting and the owners of our house have come through once a year since we moved in, they're absolutely lovely, they are kind to my children when they come and they had a little chuckle when DS1 pointed out where he'd taken a chunk out of the wall, the lady ruffled his hair, lookrd ay my poor mortified face and said "kids will be kids, I know you'll fix it before you leave when you decide to move"

They've actually mentioned to the real estate that they cant wait til the next inspection in March because they are itching to meet DS3.

Thats what happens when u rent a house out. Strangers live in it! and they are paying damn good money to live there.

If you dont like strangers living in ur house you have poured ur heart and soul into and cant handle respecting their privacy then dont rent it out!

The ops house is managed by an agent so dont see why the LLs need to sticky beak and complain shes attacking their precious trees.

Pathetic and sounds like they are on a power trip!

Im pretty sure Star Light was referring to others who posted after about owners attending inspections. I see absolutely nothing wrong witj someone who owns and rents out a house driving past occasionally. Only if they impact on the tenants right to quiet enjoyment is there a problem (which sounrs like what has happened in the OP,I agree the OP's landlords seem petty) but a LL simply driving past? Totally different and nothing wrong with it IMO.

No need to get so defensive - I agree that in the OP's case they are overreacting. I was simply trying to give a different perspective for those who see it as such a terrible thing for a home owner to drive past the house they are renting out.

Knowing you are renting to strangers, doesn't change the fact that they are still strangers. You may be the perfect tennant, but there are lots out there who aren't, regardless of how much rent they pay. So yes, I am going to keep an eye on an investment that cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars, even just for piece of mind. I think you would find this is actually quite common.

A little off topic here, but the landlords who own my home live around the corner and walk past my house at least 3-4 times per week, plus drive past everyday. I've caught her having a good google at my house (from the road) and I happen to see her from another window in the house. She even told me at a house inspection, she is a perfectionist. Whilst she isn't doing anything illegal, I feel it's invading, as if I can't be trusted and I've kept the place immaculate for nearly 3 years.

I do agree your landlords are overreacting! God sake, it will grow back.

    That would annoy me OP.

I'm very lucky that I know my landlords and am friends with their little sister, who comes to my place regularly for coffee :-)

The landlords live interstate and usually laugh when I ring to ask if I can do something in the garden. They've even said that they don't even look at the photos the RE email them after inspections.

I think some LLs are just a bit more cruisy than others.

Not defensive just over the power trip I see landlords on sometimes.

And I dont get the driving past thing? If its through an agent u are paying them to look after the place and whats the point of driving past? To see if theres 3 weeds? The lawn needs mowing? Theres a box of rubbish next to the bins? See if the house is still standing? I dont get it.

Sounds like stalker behavior to me

Rental investment properties are the only investment (outside of principal home) where ppl become so attached.
If you are that attached to an investment property, you probably shouldn't have it. Let's face it, people generally only have them to appreciate in value over time. A cut shrub or even a stain on a carpet isn't going to depreciate the value of the asset. And why bother going through an agent, and spending money for pretty much no reason, if you are going to do the RE's job yourself anyway.

I used to drive past my place all the time. I don't stop and gawk but I do drive slower to see of everything is in order.

I now rent interstate and try to keep the place spotless inside and out. I wouldn't care whether the landlords drove past.

I have had some shocking tenants and some agents dont care so I look at it as making sure that the tenant and agent are doing the right thing.

OP, I do agree with you though, I think your LL was overreacting.
