@miissalina - I don't think it's tested for at Westmead. I had had 4 failed ivf cycles last year - not even a chemical so I wanted to get tested as I thought something might be wrong. I read a book called 'is your body baby friendly" by Dr Beer, a pioneer in automimmune/nk issues in the US. Dr Matthias here in Sydney trained under him.

I saw Dr M in Jan and had a hysteroscopy and uterine biopsy and about 8 vials of blood taken. I had my follow up appointment yesterday where he confirmed that I have these things called anti nuclear antibodies (ANA) which he explained as when I have a transfer my body goes into an overdrive immune reaction to it. I also have elevated blood and uterine NK cells, so when I have the transfer they attack the embryo thinking it's a disease. Essentially I would never have been able to get pregnant with just IVF. Judging by the number of ladies on the NK thread there is quite a few of us with these problems, all to a varying degree and some of the ladies on there have a lot tougher hurdles than me.

Thanks @hwaterhouse, I'm hoping this year is it for me and I do get to the ultimate of having a baby in my arms.

    Hi everyone else

@Chiefsgirl it goes to show just how much our own research pays off sometimes did u have a family history of auto immune issues at all ?? I have looked into it as I am abit over the top with checking every avenue I've had one chemical pregnancy but no IVF transfers so I will see how I go with the transfers first

@miissalina, you are so right with regards to doing our own research!

I have had a form of arthritis in my knees since childhoold and have IBS which is inflamation in my bowel so when I heard about it something clicked. Reading the book was like a light went on. It's good that you know the testing is there, and if you feel you aren't getting anywhere with IVF alone you can always look into it. I have completely unexplained infertility except for my age, so wanted to look into it to make sure I had checked everything. I only wish I had known about it before I did 4 failed ivf cycles.

On the other hand, I now how I respond to the drugs, we think we know the right combination to get good quality eggs so hopefully now I have the immune treatments to go with it I might have success!

@Chiefsgirl did u have any trouble getting them to test you for it? Was it just a blood test??
I no some specialists are reluctant to take advice from patients but we know our own bodies so well that most of the time we are correct ( it's not like we haven't been over analysing things since we started TTC)

@Miisilina Dr Matthias is a specialist who is in the immune field so he has a specific list of blood tests and biopsy tests that are done that I think most FS do not do or know how to interpret the results. I made the appointment and they sent me out a questionnaire. he then asked me further questions at the appointment and gave me the forms for the blood tests that he wanted to do and then the forms for the hysteroscopy to be done. His receptionist made the booking that same day for the next week (it has to be done on a certain cd of your cycle). It's not cheap ($300 initial consult which you get abit back from Medicare but not much), some of the blood tests aren't covered and then you have a day in hospital as well.

I just didn't want to do another cycle before I had been tested.

Dr Bradbury told me she doesn't really believe in immune/nk cells having an impact on fertility, but has said that I could do his treatments in conjunction with her IVF cycle. I do have to go back to her to discuss what he would like me to take though, so she might balk at it!

All that being said, you haven't actually got to complete a full ivf cycle yet, so you may not have a problem and need further testing. These forums are full of women who it only takes one or two goes and they are successful. It's always good to know your options though.

Not good news for me from my ultrasound today :-( while the fluid has cleared from my endometrium there is fluid in my left (only remaining) tube causing a hydrosalpinx?? It's likely to need to be removed or clamped before our FET so fluid doesn't drain into endometrium and unstick an embie. It's likely the cause of our secondary infertility. I'm kinda glad they found it but exhausted thinking about all the months of trying naturally and with clomid which almost certainly would never had resulted in a pregnancy. Far out it really is one step forward, two back!
Sorry just needed to get that off my chest.
Great to hear of your DrM progress Chiefsgirl x
