I would buy her a 30cm bike at that age. Yes, the quality isn't as good at the chain stores but since they are not on them that long on them it doesn't matter. We bought a very expensive 30cm bike for DS1 and quite quickly realised we didn't need to . His current bike is a 40cm (he is 5) and is from Kmart and has now started to wear down but he has outgrown after two years. We will now purchase a better bike as that bike will need to take harder treatment and last till 9ish.

I got a bike for DS for Xmas from toys r us- a schwinn. I can let you know on Boxing Day what it's like! Tbh I would ignore anyone trying to get you to spend a heap of money- you don't even know if she'll like it yet! MIL bought DS a very fancy balance bike for Xmas last year and he has ridden it maybe twice. He much prefers his scooter. I was reluctant to get him a proper bike for Xmas but he was adamant that's what he wanted. I would go a cheaper one and if she really enjoys it, buy a better one when she outgrows this one.

Funny you said that, we spent $125 on a balance bike 5 months ago that she showed no interest in and kept trying to ride her friends pedal bikes when we would visit, so i sold it on gumtree still virtually brand new :/ Waiting for the after xmas sales to buy her a bike with training wheels

DD1 got a 30cm bike from Big W when she was 3. It is coming up 2 years old now and its still going strong. In fact its in such good condition that poor DD2 is not getting her own bike, she is getting DD1's hand me down as I don't see the point in buying another bike the same size when we already have one.
