Default 5 year old wanting to co sleep again

My 5 year old DD has been wanting to co sleep lately. She is having nightmares, and seems to need our comfort... I am happy for her to do this, but I do worry how long this phase might last.

Has anyone had any experience with this? What did you do?

She always starts the night in her own bed, but comes in around 12 - 2am....

What about taking her back to her bed and hopping in with her until she goes back to sleep? Also try a nightlight

(I have nothing against co sleeping but I know how hard it can be to get them into their own bed...so just suggesting alternatives)

Thanks for your reply. Yes, we have tried that one, it can literally take up to 2 hours in her room. I don't know why it is so different her being in our bed, but she goes straight back to sleep that way.

Has anything changed in her life? I found the 2 months before bubs was born, my 4yo was doing the same thing. But as soon as DD2 arrived she was fine and back in her own bed... I put it down to her being unsure about what was going to happen in the future.

Not much help though :/ DH ended up sleeping in our spare room just so we could all get some sleep

Thanks Anjalee, not that I can think of, unless she is just getting over tired being the end of a busy term.... who knows!

It's reassuring that your DD went back to her own bed ok. I guess that's what worries me... will she still be coming in when she is 7?! haha.

I'd ask her teacher, as well as dd, if there's been any bullying etc at school - it may well be there that the change has occurred.

But all in all, sometimes we all need a little extra comfort.

I wouldn't be encouraging it (like you I have no problem with cosleeping but if its a problem for your sleep or DH's sleep then it needs to be short term) but what about a small mattress slid under your bed like a trundle that she can pull out on bad nights? Or the same under her bed so that you can get some sleep in her room (actually I think this is even a better idea, as you would then have more control over weaning her back off the company)

As above^^, try a mattress beside your bed and you can still have your hand on her for comfort until she falls back to sleep.
