Default Sleeping in car seats on long trips

I have a couple of long trips coming up in the car with the kids. 1. For Christmas which will be around 3-4 hrs each way. 2. From Sydney (Blue mtns) to Brisbane.

I recently turned DS2 (10 months) forward facing because the rear facing limit on his seat is 9kg and I'm regretting turning him, even though he loves it! I think he would be safer rear facing and on these trips in particular he will be sleeping in the car so would be more comfortable if his seat was reclined. I don't think he would be happy if I turned him back (obviously also having to buy a new seat which has a larger limit).

Does anyone have any tips for helping babies be comfortable in their seat? I have a 4 yr old as well but he's worked out how to sleep comfortably (ie. Not with his head flopping forward).

Not sure if it helps, but we have a meridian for ds (now almost 3). It has 4 recline positions, and for long trips I always put it further back....

He also went into it at 14mnths, and was only just on the line to turn him to ff'ing. (we were in an accident and replaced our seat with this one) and still has plenty of room before he needs another, so I found it a worthwhile (though costly) investment!

Thanks! I hadn't even thought about reclining forward facing seats.

I know a few people the have turned kids back to rear facing (me included) and they seem fine. Infa secure make a 0-4 seat with high rf markers that you can pick up on special for $140. That might be an option - you should get a few years out of it still. Otherwise just recline your seat as far as you can.

Rearfacing is 5x safer than ff but sometimes just not practical.

Did your baby care Amyd? DS2 always hated car trips when he was rf. I know if he screams when we are driving then I will have to turn him ff again because it will be too distracting for the driver.

He seemed to swap quite happily. We turned him ff for a long car trip (6 days) to give us more leg room. Turned back quite happily. We have swapped him a couple of times since then with no worries.
