Default Toilet training a late talker?

Should I try or should I wait? DS is 27mths and has about 20 words (no poo or wee words) He has not shown any real interest in the toilet but "tells" me after he's done a poo that he needs changing (by patting his bottom) nothing for wee though. Is it possible to start training him when he can't tell me in words yet?

I think it doesn't hurt to try.

My ds 26months only last month decided to become a chatterbox.
In the last couple of days though, he's also decided to do wees on the loo. And it's not by him telling me that he needs to go, rather I take him at set times (after he wakes up, before a bath, before we go out etc etc).

I think in time he'll let me know when he needs to go, but for now I'm happy that he understands how to push. I guess though, for me, I don't expect him to be trained in a week and am happy with the way things currently are.
