Default Sperm donor wait at Sydney IVF clinics

    Hi all,

I am single over 40, and trying to get pregnant through IVF. I've been going to Fertility First in Hurstville where donor sperm is pretty much 'on tap' I've decided to try another clinic though, and just met with IVF Australia, but their wait list for donor sperm is 3 months. At my age every month counts. Can anyone advise on what to situation is with other clinics? Thanks!

Default Sperm donor wait at Sydney IVF clinics

    Hi there Nettlestar,

I'm in a similar boat to you and the only other clinic I have found in Sydney is Fertility East in Bondi Junction. They work a little differently in that you have to buy five straws of sperm upfront (enough for 5 ivf cycles) and it costs about $4,500. There is no waitlist but of course a much bigger upfront cost.

How are you doing with IVF Australia? I am with Fertility First and not very happy with them so far.

    Best wishes,

    Pekoe

Hi Pekoe, I have put myself down on the 'waiting list' at IVF Australia, with an indication there was a 2-3 months wait for sperm. I really liked the doctor that I spoke to there. That was a month ago and I haven't heard anything from them since I signed up. You have to pay a $100 deposit to go on the waiting list. Though they said 2-3 months, their confirmation email said 4... It is very different to Fertility First - the donors can choose who they are willing to donate to, so singles or lesbian couples may get pushed lower down the queue depending on the wishes of the donors. It sounded like there was a much smaller pool to select from also when the time came - you don't see the list until your name comes up. Because of the wait, I've decided to go ahead with another cycle with Fertility First in the meantime. That was my GPs suggestion. I have some big reservations about FF, but there is no question that the ease of access to sperm is a big factor. I'd be very happy to talk off list to compare Fertility First experiences.
