We are getting our tree today- a real one. I haven't had one since I was a kid and the smell brings back happy memories for me. I do have a question for those who know- do I need to put water in the bucket the tree is standing in??

I'm the same as you, it is all about the smell. Yes, you need to put water in the bucket and also keep checking and filling it up when it needs it, they are quite thirsty trees because they are big.
