Id be flabbergasted at the staff member, id give her a good serve.

Then id tell ds that not everyone believes the same thing as we do so we should keep our beliefs to ourselves incase we hurt anyones feelings (which is what i tell them about how people believe in god and we dont)

Weeelllll I said 'I don't think it's right' as in morally right, not incorrect. I really can't see how that is the same as telling someone their BELIEF is wrong as in incorrect.
Anyway, it is 11.40 here in Melbourne so I am going to bed. Because the word wrong is starting to look..... wrong.

This one was a while back, but just wanted to respond.
I wasn't saying that you can't TRY to shield your kids from whatever you want, just that we live in a society where people have widely varying beliefs. You can't, in reality, shield your kids from all alternative viewpoints. At some point, a child who believes in santa is going to hear something to the contrary. If they then respond to that by losing all belief in santa, and being completely shattered... well I don't think it's fair to blame that on someone else. Nor would I find it reasonable to have the same response if your child, raised in a christian household, heard another kid say that god wasn't real.

We KNOW that our children are going to come across viewpoints that don't fit with what we want to expose them to. We DON'T get to control that, because we don't get to control other people for our own purposes. We just need to work with that.

If my 5yo son was saying that Santa wasn't real at the shops around other kids, I would ask him to be quiet. However, my son is pretty defiant, so I understand it's not always possible.

On the Santa thing, my son asked me the other day if Santa was real or just a man in a costume. I asked him what he thought, and he said a man in a costume. I told him that there is a real santa, but the ones in the shops are obviously just a man in a costume, but it's a secret and not to tell other kids, which seemed to satisfy him.

Anyway, the shop assistant was completely out of line. You don't discipline someone else's kid for saying that a fictional character is fictional. If she felt strongly about it, she should have had a quiet word to you.

Msmummy why didn't u take the chance to tell him the truth instead of making up a lie. Your son sounds intelligent enough to have figured it out already. ..won't it be awkward when he asks u later why u lied?
