Default Are you involved with the P&C?

I am thinking about getting involved as my son starts school next year.

Obviously everyones experience is different with different schools and people but in general whats it like? What do you do? Good idea to do it or not?

I dont want to sign up to something with no clue about what goes on and look like a goose :-)

For the sake of your child and every other child in the school -GO TO THE P&C!!!!! As you said, every school will vary, but without parental input the school, or the participating parents, will just do what it pleases. Most schools post minutes on their websites, sit in on a couple of meetings to see how things flow and don't be afraid to speak up if you want to say something. Most P&C committees are actually quite pleased to see newbies show an interest in the school.

What difference will it make.......we are a small private school- one proactive parent who was a frequent participant at P&C suggested we should replace the old school piano....it would have cost about $12,000 - nearly 1/3 of our annual P&C budget....the principal looked into some options and came back to the next meeting with some information on prices etc...I asked what the heck they would use a piano for (they don't teach piano in our school music classes!) so it turns out it would just be for the school concert and special events like that...I suggested they could probably find a lot more practical uses for that money and the idea was canned!!

And....don't get me started on school photography policies..........

You don't have to 'sign up'....you're not obligated to go to EVERY meeting - but do try to be involved!
