Thembs - so sorry to hear that your numbers aren't as high as you would like as yet. Everything crossed for you that they prove with a late implementation.
Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. Keep forgetting I can post now I have introduced myself.
I have a quick question which I know has been covered many times before, but my hubby and I have started looking at the World Egg bank through Monash and it seems really expensive compared with SA. We though it might be easier to not travel as far with a 3 yr old. But from a quick glance, it looks like TWEB will cost around $28,000 not including travel and accommodation in Melb.
Can anyone who is willing to share please give us an estimated total cost of their trip to SA? We will prob be aiming for nice accommodation but economy flights (as much as I'd love business class we just couldn't afford it..).
thinking SA might still be the way to go based on quick estimates given we could prob have 2 tries there compared to 1 in Melb.
    Thanks heaps!!
    xx

Hi Mardi, for my hubby and I our budget is 15-16k inc. Flights, hire car, all treatment costs at CFC, donor agency, meds for me, accommodation and a bit of spending $, so definitely cheaper. We would have done TWEB if it was more cost effective, but its not. We are staying at a pretty nice hotel too, so you could do it cheaper with some tweaking.
    Hope this helps you

Em glad to hear you received your plan x

    twirlywhirly congratulations and good luck

Esperanza we have the lining scan a few days before egg transfer to make sure the lining is going according to plan. If it's not they increase the oestradol to thicken it up more. It seems the thicker your lining the better chance you have.

Jacks, I'm so sorry to hear of your negative experience, sounds like with holiday cover you slipped through the cracks which is really ****ty and shouldn't happen. Your experience is a reminder to us all that the Docs no matter how wonderful they are do forget things, they see hundreds of women a week so please speak up and remind them of what you want, its way too important not too. I will say that leaving you to rest for 5 mins on your own and not seeing the doc after the transfer is the norm. You are expected to let them know how your blood tests go, the poor nurses are run off their feet getting everyone's plans together no time to chase up people who have had transfers, in saying that I received an email this week from the records keeper as she hadn't been told of my negative result In November by the nurse or doc.

If it were me I would be asking actually no I would be demanding they do a free cycle since they ballsed yours up so badly. Send them the correspondence and highlight the donor sperm paragraphs to reiterate your point. I would send it to both doctors and there is probably a practice manager that should get a copy as well.

Whilst I understand why you don't want to go back to CFC, I worry for you being in JoBurg on your own. Please be careful. Please also note that if you are dealing with Medfem, they are much worse with communication than CFC. Please don't give up because of this bad experience, its a ****ty road we have to travel but it will be worth it in the end when you have a bundle in your arms ((hugs))

Thembs: sorry to hear your update, hoping it's just a slow starter x

    Emski: yay! Have fun booking

Esperenza: from memory it was just a day or so til we got confirmation of the dates. We did have a bit of a wait until those dates but it's always good to know things are moving along.

Jacks: sorry you had such a bad experience. I guess it's important for all of us to remember that every culture is unique and they some can come across as very pragmatic, almost 'hard'. Good luck for JoBurg.

AFM I have a question for those who have BTDT.
Did any of you take a flu shot before you went ? I only ask because I have managed to come down with a bad case of head cold/sinus and 2 weeks later , now the flu. I'm concerned that if I catch something in transit, that they would cancel a Tx?

Sorry I have another question: what happens in the case where DH's sample isn't very good?
Back history: DH has had issues with morphology/count in the past. The only exception to this has been with our last IVF after following a specified regime from Wazza our FS. Remarkably DH's results came back as 'normal' for the first time ever . He is following this regime again for our DE cycle but just wondering if by some chance it's bad, do they offer an option for using DS? Should I mention It to the CFC doctor incase the overlooked this?

Hi Jacks - We went to Joburg for my DE cycle. Unfortunately, our donor would not travel to CT.

As you already know the lead up to travel and the cycling is a very exciting and highly anxious time. If you are anything like me, you would have felt you were putting everything on the line for the cycle emotionally and financially. So communication was a very important issue for us. As you well know lack of good communication only exacerbates anxiety.

Whilst we had a wonderful result in the end with the birth of our beautiful baby boy, we had no end of trouble with communication with Medfem clinic. In the end thankfully due to time difference, I was able to harass them for answers, treatment plans via telephone. My DH also intervened contacting Jenny from Baby2mom to get on to our inquiries. Interestingly, it took for me to CC the agency in on all correspondence for me to get a response.

The poor communication. Also lead to us making the decision to change our flights and leave a day earlier a decision that ended up costing us a further $300 (thanks Qantas). However, it ended up being the right one, when we landed we had all these messages requesting that we attend the clinic a day earlier as the donors EPU had been brought forward.

I never received a single email from my supposed treating Dr. When we arrived our Dr was on holiday. I was appointed another Dr who did not realise that our donors EPU was that day?! The Administration had no record of entry that I had attended to the clinics payment!! Thankfully one of the Admin Personnel had a friend who worked at the Clinic's Bank, who was able to confirm full payment.

This all happened notwithstanding I had sent them copies oft he IMT. I also carried with us full copies of all banking transactions (a good tip for others).

My DH ended up telling them that he would stage a sit-in until they could confirm full payment. He also kept having to ask them when they wanted to take his specimen. In the end one of the Staff said to us, "you Australians are very uptight, you need to relax, this is they way things are done in Sth Africa, things are more laid back". I responded that it was a very daunting and emotional experience for people to travel to a country they had no idea about, with concerns about safety and that a lot of faith and trust had been placed in their clinic. The staff member at least acknowledged that and further said they had been upgrading their computers, so that may have contributed to some of the communication issues.

Following my TF there was no further communication from the clinic or the agency. We ended up being in CT when I was due my BT, so I contacted CFC. I saw Dr W, who albeit, I wasn't even his patient arranged for me to have a BT. He subsequently provided me with the results and a treatment plan. I still have never been contacted by Medfem with either my results or to see if we were lucky enough to have a baby.

There is another clinic in Joburg called Vitalab. May be worth doing some research into them if you are set on Joburg.

Interestingly, another SA couple in the Medfem waiting room picked up on our anxiety and said "I know it all looks very disorganised here, but it seems to somehow work out in the end".

If you do go to Joburg, do not stay anywhere other than Sandton. It is probably the best suburb. Most hotels will have a shuttle service to Nelson Mandela Square, where there is good shopping and restaurants. But you have to be on guard all the time in Joburg even in Sandton (the good suburb). I would not walk anywhere and would truly just stick to your hotel, clinic, Sandton Mall (Nelson Mandela Square) and a guided tour to the Apartheid museum and Soweto.

I honesty don't know whether I would go to Joburg on my own, but I have not yet been placed in the position to have to make that decision. If I did go, I would most likely fly in fly out. Whereas, I would definitely go to CT by myself.

I wish you you the very best for your journey.

Thembs so sorry to hear your cycle didn't go well.

Blinky, Definitely bring it up, hopefully Wazzas programme will have worked, but you don't want the same scenario as poor Jacks, bring it up now and again when you have your first appointment. I don't know the procedure for donor sperm but I guess the more notice you give them that this will be a possibility, the better. I would ask that your hubby's sperm be tested at your initial appointment that way you will know before egg collection which way to go.

    Thanks Jodi
I had been thinking about it for a while but Jacks post definitely prompted me to ask the q'n. I have emailed the doctor to get his perspective.

Another random q .... Did anyone do a township tour while in capetown? Thoughts?
