    I get that.

I just think any law could be twisted, I truely think ( based on this thread alone) that if anybody tried to use this law with the type of agendas people are worried about they would have a snow balls chance in hell of achieving it.

There is just WAY too much support against the Fred Niles of this world.

    Rightly so.

    That's my concern too.

As I said, I'm not a lawyer but the fact that so many lawyers (and doctors and medical insurers) have expressed concern is enough for me to believe that there is a real possibility of problems down the track.

Is there though? Think back on things Abbot has said- and he is our PM!

I don't think so either... But I don't think it has to be a case of one or the other losing out either. At the start of this thread I was thinking the bill was a good thing because it supports both the rights of mother and (unborn yet viable) baby. Now I've seen some good arguments presented regarding the slippery slope it could become (especially considering the governmental make-up) in terms of women's autonomy in pregnancy, and I can't ignore that. It's definitely one of the most difficult topics I've faced on bubhub ever! I'm normally so definite about my opinions!

Look I hate Tony Abort as much as the next person and think he's as sexist as they come BUT, to think that this Law and even Tony Abbot being PM is going to lead to abortion being made illegal and removing other rights from women is just scare mongering! NEVER will that happen.

If this law is starting to do all if these things or stop women from not being at 40 + 10, or home birthing etc, then that will be time to make further amendments.

This is the 21st century, there is no way we will ever go backwards in that respect. Next thing you know everyone is going to be scared women are about to lose their right to vote!!!

The thing is, this sort of law HAS seen women lose rights in the US- yes, here and now in the 21st century. It's not scaremongering to be worried about the potential ramifications of such a law, especially with such a conservative/right wing govt. You only have to look at what the govt wants to do with laws surrounding racial vilification to see that going backwards is not out of the realm of possibility.

    Tony Abort *snort*
