Default Is a contractions like a wave of sharp pain?

Hi I am new to this site and I was wanting to know what other mums felt when they where first having contractions. I am 38weeks and 5days pregnant the last 5 days I had constant back pain and cramps, but last night I woke up at least 4 times with this sharp wave like pain in my stomach. I thought it might be a contraction but as it was constant I wasn't sure. This morning I had it 3 more times. Its not BH this was like someone was twisting a knife in my lower stomach. Just wondering what you mummies felt in early labour and how long after feeling the first one did you end up in hospital. Thanks =)

Ohhh id love to know this one too. Last night I had contractions most of the night. Mine were this insane tightening all over my stomach and it really took my breath away. But I made myself go to bed and I had some of that sharp pain in both right and left side in my pubic/pelvis area. It was similar to ligament pain I used to get when I sneezed in first trimester. I think the sharp pain was my position I was lying cause that went away when I shifted my leg. And now I'm just back to the tightenings.

Eta. My tightening are like Braxton hicks used to be but much more intense and regular (were every 3-4 mins last night) and they didn't go away when I moved positions and were all over my entire stomach.

I second BeeSam - insane tightening all over stomach that takes your breath away. For me sharp pains in pregnancy were more round ligament pains. I couldn't point to the pain of a contraction, it was just everywhere at the front of my tummy, and built up to a peak then settled to nothing over 1 minute.
I had spurious labour / pre- labour contractions on and off for 6 days after a stretch and sweep then went into real labour on the 6th night and had her the following morning. So it might take some time still! Good luck!

My contractions in both labours were in my back lower back. Its really hard to describe. Up until I went into labour with dd id never felt anything like it before. Sharp, long, isolated to lower back and very regular. I had no lead up to her labour either though. It was just on like donkey kong. They progressively got to the point I had to be supported through them via leaning on something as I couldnt stand breath or talk. It was like that for about 7 hours until I had her! Ds was much the same. But in my case I knew instantly. Everyone is different though. It wasnt really until tbe pushing bit I noticed obvious tighting in my uterus or belly like bh.

I thought I had terrible wind pain cramps which were followed by a desperate dash to the loo and diarrhoea!

Turns out I was in early labour and those wind pain cramps were exactly 5 mins apart...

My contractions started off feeling like bad period pain. In fact, 3am and groggy, I thought it was period pain until I remembered I hadn't had a period for the last 9 months.

In between contractions was complete relief from pain, and do welcome. But, I didn't start slow and build up, I woke up contracting every 4-5 minutes with about 3 minutes rest in between, so so exhausting.

I had bub 4 weeks ago now ,she was our first so had no idea what contractions would be like. I had Braxton hicks from three weeks before having bub so wasn't sure how I would know the difference between those and real labour pains. Well I can tell you, you just know! My contractions were so damn painful I couldn't talk, almost in tears, and horrendous lower back pain. I stopped me from being able to walk or breath comfortably.
