Not in cabs, just in the general area.

Physical assaults and sexual assaults. Against both men and women.

According the QPS Crime Stats website there's been 41 reported assaults (doesn't specify whether physical or sexual) in this small area in the last month alone.

I think it's good to be mindful that we're more likely to be assaulted by a known male, unfortunately short of having no husband, no male relatives, never dating, and having no male friends there's not a lot we can do. This is a massive issue that isn't easily solved.

The taxi issue is. A good solution is right here in front of us. Unfortunately I'm in SA so won't get to utilise it but I'm happy for the women of Melbourne who wish to use this service. Those who don't wish to don't have to.

The thing is, it doesn't matter how often it happens. It only takes one event to ruin a woman's life and in turn affect the people around her, I've seen it happen. It's not a rare occurrence.

9 times out of ten ive had perfectly nice taxi drivers. I've also been creeped out by sleazy taxi drivers and even had a taxi driver get into the back seat with me when he stopped. I was lucky I wasn't so drunk I didn't realise what he was doing.

Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world. Getting into a taxi late at night, especially when drunk is essentially getting into a car with a stranger and placing your trust in them. If there is the option of a woman driver, I'd take it for many reasons. I think it's a great idea.
