    Default 2 year old and not really eating solids...

    My nearly 2 year old for some reason prefers soft foods. (mostly). She will eat biscuits or muesli bar (chewy), and thats about the hardest she will go. She loves yoghurt, almost anything pureed, and vegie mash (again mostly). It is a constant battle to get her to eat anything outside of yoghurt and pureed pouches that you get from the supermarket. It is just as difficult even to get her to feed herself. She can do it, just won't. I have tried many times to give her an appropriate version of what we have, e.g chopped up chicken and veg or pasta, but she won't touch it. I find I resort to yoghurt for dinner just so she has something and wont wake in the night hungry.

    Totally at a loss as to what to try next... any ideas????

    Are her tonsils quite large and so the harder foods causing her discomfort when she swallows?

    I have had similar trouble with DS. But he has improved. The MCHN advised me to cut out all pouches including yogurt and if I was going to give him pureed food/yogurt give it off a spoon as it helps with them learning to chew. He now has a selection plate for lunch and has modified versions of our food for dinner. Pasta is the biggest winner. We have about 3 different pasta meals a week but I use small pasta as he eats that better.

    She has the yoghurt and her morning porridge off a spoon, but the puree is from pouches. (she loves sucking them out!) but I will give it a go and put it into a bowl and see how she goes.... she was a great eater when we first started her on solids, but sort of went backwards in the last 6 months. I don't get it!

    I think this is something you might want to speak to your mchn or a paed about. I don't mean to be alarmist and it's probably just a toddler being stubborn, but not practicing chewing can have implications for speech later on so it's probably best to get a professional to put you on the right track with it.

    we have been through the same thing. It's very difficult but I agree with taking out pouches all together so she has to try other things. Use one of those section plates and put all different types of healthy options and let her try different things. She can use her fingers if she likes. Whatever gets her interested. I have posted a recent thread about the same things and someone suggested a book called Give Pease a Chance. I haven't read it yet but heard great things. It is very normal at this age so you aren't alone. Also, if she is snacking a lot during the day that could make meal time harder. Good luck.

    At 2 they really should be eating what you eat. My daughter is 2y5m and has been eating what we eat for a long time now (including tougher things like pork fillets and that)

    Maybe you could try making your own purees so you can make them so they have more chunks in them and then gradually move on from there.

    Also maybe even use those cool shape cutters and cut things into shapes to make it look cool? She might think its fun and go for it?

    I have tried:

    cutting food into little bite size finger food and sectioned it out for her to try... doesn't touch it!

    Really smooth mash with small lumps through it - sometimes gets eaten, mostly not!

    Outside of that, she isn't a big eater to begin with.. her daily meal plan looks a little something liek this, tell me what you think...

    b/fast - porridge
    m/tea - bikkie or small muesli bar
    Lunch - sandwich first (not touched) then pouch.
    milk for nap
    A/tea - never very much, maybe a bikkie or some cheese (although she has gone off cheese)
    Dinner - an appropriate version of our dinner is always given - never eaten and rarely tried.
    After dinner - I give in and give some puree fruit/vegie (pouch) and then yoghurt or custard
    Milk for bed.

    She ate more than this 6 months ago while she was still breastfeeding! Its dinner that concerns me most because I fear that she will wake hungry in the night!! aaarrgghh!!

    i.e I have offered cut up fruit etc for morning and afternoon tea, she is just not interested!

    If you keep giving in after offering dinner she's going to keep refusing dinner. If it were me I'd only offer what I wanted her to eat and if she refuses....too bad. Kids won't starve, they will eventually realise that there is only one choice for dinner.

    DP and I have 5 kids between us, so we aren't very tolerant of fussy kids!
