We store on PC and 1tb portable hard drive and transfer to 16gb USB as needed but I think you can plug portable hard drive into TV.

Our movies/tv series are all on an external USB hard drive that we plug into our TV.

I actually still have all the discs around but they'll be going into the garage soon so I have my shelves free for other things.

Op, yes it is like a portable hard drive... Of sorts...
You plug it in to your pc and store whatever you like on there, then plug it into the tv and use it from there.
All your files that you put on there from your pic are now watchable on your tv. You can also put music and photos on there. They are accessible the same way a USB Flash drive is.
We only ever buy WD (western digital) brand and they store 2T of media on them.
They are very easy to use. We bought out last one for $200.... You will need to shop around, I think jb hifi is the best for price. Thru are often on special too... I have seen them anywhere from $170 - $300 for the type we get at different shops and times.
